Siphons, or tapping tubes, are used to transfer the molten metal from the pots to the transport crucibles. Because of the magnetic fields in the pot rooms these siphons are most often fabricated in cast iron.
Siphons are subject to wear, especially elbows, and must be cleaned once aluminum and dross build-up inside reduce the throat opening by given percentage.
Refraco lines sections of tapping tubes with refractory concrete. The refractory used:
1. is non-wetting to aluminum thereby facilitating cleaning and extending the period before cleaning is required; and
2. is silicon carbide based with an extremely high wear resistance which results in longer service life.
